St Stephen’s day

Stephen was originally named Vajk and was the son of a pagan chieftain.

When he was ten years old, he was baptized a

Christian and given the name Stephen.

In the year 997 AD Stephen and his pagan chieftain uncle Koppány had a fight.  Stephen won and as a result the Magyar (today known as Hungary) tribes converted from paganism to Christianity.   Pope Sylvester II gave him a crown for his efforts, and this crown of St Stephen is today still the symbol of Hungary.

In the year 1083 AD, Pope Gregory VII canonised Stephen, and he is still know as Saint Stephen of Hungary.
