Michael and All Angels

The day is also known as Michaelmas.

This is the feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Pope Gelasius gave the Archangel Michael

his own feast day in AD 487.

On this day mass is said in honour of Saint Michael.

In some parts of England Michaelmas is also known as Goose Day.  This is because it was on Michaelmas day that queen Elizabeth I received news of the defeat of the Spanish Armada at the hands of the English.   At the time she was eating goose.  Since then it has been customary to eat goose on Michaelmas day.
