Bhishma Ashtami (also known as Bhishmashtami) is observed to commemorate Bhisma Pitamaha, the son of King


Shantanu and his wife Ganga.

On this day followers fast from sunrise to sunset and perform rituals on the name of Bhishma.

Bhishma's childhood name was Devavrata. He remained as a bachelor for his whole life so that he could take care of his father.
