Setsubun-sai

This marks the day before the beginning of spring in Japan.

There is a special mamemaki  or bean-throwing ritual to

get rid of all the evil of the previous year and drive away any evil spirits and diseases for the year to come.

People go to shrines where priests and invited guests throw roasted soy beans (some wrapped in gold or silver foil), small envelopes with money, sweets, candies and other prizes at others.

In some bigger shrines, even celebrities and sumo wrestlers will be invited, and the event may be televised.
